2013 — COMMERCIAL/HAIR SALON

Previously a barber shop in a post-war outdoor mall, this building was renovated to acknowledge the history of the space while promoting a new concept in hair cuts that includes free beer, free mohawks, and ‘guaranteed shorter hair’.  The material palate focused on the use of raw, exposed finishes using plywood, concrete, galvanized conduit, and cooper plumbing.  An overhead ‘cloud’ made up of indigo stained wood slats define experience and delineate use of space.  This cloud transitions into a bent steel, powder-coated canopy that extends to the exterior and cantilevers over the sidewalk, inviting customers in.  An aluminum arrow logo was designed and fabricated in the spirit of vintage box letters signs and is attached to the front of the canopy.
